Subject: Porn is not Art Except When it is.
Hello Patrick,

I hope this arbitrary facebook message finds you well; hearth, home, art, love, all that. Hope it's all good. :)
Of course, thanks to your magnificent postering, it is impossible for me to not know about your myriad of shows, and it's always good to see what you are doing for the city and probably the world. Because we need art, and studios that will actively work to promote it. So thank-you for your efforts.
And possibly, you may have noticed, I haven't been to any shows. I do apologize and cry a combination of winter, destitution, and varying neuroses. But I am definitely an ardent follower and with the coming of spring I'm hoping to come out of my shell a little.
All of which brings me around to the newest poster, which I saw on my way to work the other day.
"Porn is not Art" is an evocative title and an intriguing notion for an art show. But I'm fairly certain I disagree with the premise. After all, this year I recorded an album, Pornoetry, which claimed the exact opposite. Or, more properly, claimed that it could be art, and that it should be art. Or should aspire to be.
It is no accident I think, that whenever a new medium emerges - be it photo, video, telephone, Internet, printing press, etc - someone somewhere finds a pornographic application. For whatever reasons it seems to fulfill some sort of human need.
At the same time there is a substantial dark side to it all; corruption, abuse, dangers of false intimacy. Which is why even if I disagree somewhat, I'm glad your show is going up. The chance to talk about something normally taboo should be be embraced. It's what great art is all about.
I wonder, might there be an evening where I can play a few songs on my guitar? I miss playing your space, and, as you can see, I have something to say on the topic. And an album to promote that fits your theme like a glove on the wrong hand. Let me know, but either way, it's good to know your sanctuary holds, and that art lives on in the world. You're an inspiration.

Jeremy

Dear Jeremy

Thank you for your email. I had two posters made. One says "PORN IS NOT ART", and another poster that says,"PORN IS ART". The reason for the show is simple. To make people think about the image PORN has had of our culture.

In the early 90's Madonna pushed boundaries with her Erotica book. But 20 plus years later. The word Erotic, Naked, Sex... these are all tame. With over 90% of males watching porn. And with young adults have parents that work most of the time and who are left alone... When they turn on the computer.... PORN is everywhere on the Internet. Children are learning about sex in a very graphic manner. Porn effects how we communicate, the dynamics of our relationships, and how we interact as partners. This exhibition will explore the impact porn has had on our lives.

Look forward to you playing live uncut songs in the gallery at the grand opening of PORN IS NOT ART.

Thank you for your kind words.

Patrick
